Singing in the Darkness
In the wee hours of the morning, I was awakened out of a deep sleep by a bird singing loudly outside my window. I sat up in the pitch blackness as my husband leaned over to say are you okay and what is that noise? Saying again it was loud was an understatement to be honest. It was as if the bird was sitting on the windowsill singing into the darkness to an audience of none. Since I had not been sleeping well, this was the first night I was sleeping soundly finally but now, this bird would not stop singing. I beat on the window hoping it would fly away to no avail. I walked out on the porch as if to scare the bird, yet it continued. “That sound is making me crazy,” I thought!
I tried to drown the sound out with a fan then realize as the sky grew lighter the bird’s music faded. With the dawn of a new morning, quietness and peace were present.
The next day I looked up why birds sing at night and found that they are often defending their territory or warning of danger. Some, however, sing because it is just their nature to sing in the dark. God then showed me that often we too must sing in the darkness through the night until the light breaks through the sky.
God speaks in the night.
Psalm 42:8 By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life
Psalm 16:7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
Psalm 77: I remembered my songs in the night.
My heart meditated, and my spirit asked:
Sometimes the Lord needs us to wake up so He can speak to us despite the darkness surrounding us or through the darkness. We often get aggravated, frustrated, and don’t understand why sweet peace won’t come but God may be desperately trying to teach us something through the darkness we would not see otherwise. As the birds sing in the darkest part of the night, the Lord showed me that even when I can’t see or don’t understand what He is doing, remember I can trust Him in all circumstances and that joy comes at dawn when the light breaks.
Psalm 30:5 Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
